Cahors, capital of the Department of the Lot, is a town with 25,000 inhabitants, situated on a semi-island formed by a loop in the River Lot. Of Gallo-Roman origin, the town experienced remarkable growth in the Middle Ages which resulted in the mediaeval and Renaissance architecture which today gives its remarkable character and beauty. Mediaeval alleyways, Renaissance windows, the domed Cathedral, XVIII century staircases, the famous Pont Valentré have recently earned the town the title of a Great Tourist Site in the Midi-Pyrenees…
Here you will leave your car and explore on foot to enjoy the charm of the town’s ancient streets, small squares, and « jardins secrets ».
CAHORS: A Town of Culture:
Much to the pleasure of those who are interested in culture, Cahors is indeed a dynamic town.
There are a host of festivals and events for you to enjoy: The week of Visages d’ailleurs (Faces from Elsewhere) which focuses on a different culture each year, during May, the Festival des Jardins (Garden Festival) throughout June, during which numerous Arts events take place, Festival Théâtre Amateur (Amateur Theatre Festival), the internationally renowned Festival de Blues (Blues Festival) at the beginning of July, as well as theatre and music programs which change monthly and exhibitions in various venues throughout the town- the Chantrerie, the Musée Henri Martin, the Médiathèque, Carré d’art, classical and jazz concerts at the Auditorium and pop-rock concerts at the Docks, not to mention Cahors’ monthly guided tours organised by La Maison du Patrimoine (Cultural Services Centre) during which you will discover the town's rich heritage and even be invited to taste local produce and wine.
Before you leave, a visit to the Saturday market on the Cathedral’s square is a must! This beautiful and exceptional market is really worth a visit and, as a bonus, there is a free concert of baroque music in the Cathedral or the cloister at 11 am! We are sure you’ll agree that it would be a shame to miss that!
